How I Found Relief from Asthma by Changing the Way I Breathe
Asthma doesn’t just steal your breath—it robs you of sleep, energy, and the ability to fully enjoy life. I know this not only from working with countless patients, but from experiencing firsthand how powerful it can be to take control of your breathing.
For so many people living with asthma, the solution isn’t always a stronger inhaler or a new medication. Sometimes, the answer is much simpler: learning to breathe differently.
At the Hobson Institute, this is exactly what we offer—an approach that goes beyond symptom management and targets the root cause. And it all starts with understanding how your body was meant to breathe.
My Introduction to the Buteyko Method
One of the most transformative tools I’ve discovered is the Buteyko Breathing Method, developed in the 1950s by Ukrainian physician Dr. Konstantin Buteyko. This method is based on a simple but groundbreaking idea: chronic over-breathing (or hyperventilation) can actually worsen asthma symptoms.
When I began to truly understand this, everything changed. By learning to breathe more slowly, more lightly, and exclusively through the nose, I saw firsthand how the body begins to regulate itself. Inflammation decreases. Energy returns. Sleep improves. And, yes—many people (including myself) reduce their reliance on asthma medications.
Integrating Science and Holistic Therapies
As a certified Buteyko educator with a background in physical therapy, my passion lies in head, neck, and airway health. I’ve been able to blend the Buteyko Method with other powerful techniques like myofunctional therapy, good oral posture training, spinal postural work, and the Laynee Restorative Breathing Method created by neurologist Dr. Lois Laynee.
This integrated approach allows me to tailor each plan of care to the person in front of me. Whether it’s a child who’s wheezing through the night or an adult frustrated by medications that don’t seem to work, we start by addressing the most foundational act of all—breathing.
And the results speak for themselves: better energy, fewer asthma attacks, improved sleep, and even greater emotional balance. All from learning how to breathe correctly.
Why You Should Care
If you’re living with asthma, I want you to know this: there is another way. Breathing may seem automatic, but it’s something you can retrain—gently and effectively. You don’t have to feel stuck, tired, or dependent on medication alone.
At the Hobson Institute, we work with patients both in-person and virtually, so no matter where you live, you can begin your own journey toward functional breathing and lasting relief.
Ready to Rethink Your Breathing?
If you’ve tried everything and nothing seems to help, maybe it’s time to look inward—to your breath. I’d love to help you reclaim your energy, restore your sleep, and find freedom from asthma in a way you may never have imagined.
