Lactation

Why is Lactation Consulting different at the Hobson Institute?

  • Our lactation consultants are licensed Speech and Language Pathologists.
  • They are also trained in tongue tie evaluation and treatment along with myofunctional therapy.
  • This training allows them to identify if oral tethered tissues such as lip, tongue and buccal ties are affecting the infants latch and ability to nurse.
  • They work together with our craniofacial team and are able to identify when infants many need intra-oral soft tissue releases or Cranio Functional Manual Medicine or CranioSacral treatment.

Why would a Mom and her baby need feeding therapy from an SLP or LC?

  • Can work with SLP directly to develop a personalized solution to overcome a variety of different breastfeeding or bottle feeding challenges.
  • Babies may lack the ability to sustain a latch or coordinate their sucking, swallowing, and breathing to efficiently transfer milk. They may have trouble gaining weight, staying alert and awake for feedings. They may have spillage or clicking during bottle feeds, or tire out and only finish 1-2 oz of a bottle when they should be taking more. They may seem to refuse breast or bottle and have trouble with one or the other, or both. Lactation consultants and feeding therapists such as an SLP or OT can help you overcome these challenges and achieve your feeding goals.

What are symptoms Moms should be aware of that may indicate need for feeding therapy (SLP or LC)?

  • Plugged ducts, engorgement, or breast infections like mastitis
  • Sore, cracked or painful nipples, lipstick shape
  • Milk supply concerns
  • Struggling with nursing positions, baby preferring one side
  • Issues with latching, popping on and off
  • Pumping concerns\
  • Feedings taking more than 30 minutes, baby not seeming satisfied
  • Difficulty feeding baby breast or bottles

What does a Lactation Consultant or SLP do for a newborn?

  • Provide more efficient feedings
  • Improve healthy weight gain
  • Help baby have a good experience during breast and bottle feedings
  • Help baby maintain seal for pacifier or bottle
  • Facilitate positive oral and feeding experiences
  • Guide recovery from tongue or tip tie procedure
  • Help resolve reflux or arching and spitting up after feeds
  • Help get to the root cause of “colic” – this is always a symptom, not a diagnosis, and baby needs our help relieving their distress
  • Baby may be experiencing “colic” due to gas that is accumulating during nursing, which could have an underlying cause of tongue or lip tie or other oral motor issues
