What is Dysarthria?

Dysarthria is the medical term for slurred, slow or low volume speech changes. It can make it very difficult for people to understand what you are saying. It can also be related to reduced breath support after being on a ventilator for example. 

Symptoms of Dysarthria

  • Poor breath support – running out of air as you speak 
  • Low volume 
  • People asking you to repeat constantly 
  • People not understanding your speech 
  • Gasping for air when talking 
  • Mumbling or poor enunciation 
  • Pronouncing words incorrectly
