How Dr. Paris and Dr. Rocabado Met

Dr. Rocabado and Dr. Paris met years ago and through their friendship, the Rocabado Craniofacial therapy and treatment was brought to the USA through the University of St. Augustine, where Dr. Jenny is an instructor.

About Dr. Rocabado

Mariano Rocabado: PT, DPT, ccTT is a doctor of physical therapy and director of the Rocabado Institute, former dean of the faculty of rehabilitation sciences at the University of Andres Bello, Santiago, Chile. In the academic field, he is a full professor at the University of Chile, Department of orthodontics, and full professor at the School of Physical Therapy, University of Andres Bello. He is also a full Professor at the Orthopaedic Manual Therapy Masters program, and the Masters Program in Physiopathology of the Craniocervical, Craniomandibular and Facial Pain Program, University of Andres Bello.

From Dr. Paris’ Student to Colleague

According to Dr. Paris in a guest editorial published in Cranio, the Journal of Craniomandibular & Sleep Practice, “Dr. Mariano Rocabado’s contribution to the treatment of temporomandibular joint treatment. That we have become a doctoring profession is largely because of the likes of Dr. Mariano Rocabado, who developed the advanced body of knowledge and skills unique to our profession, and thus freed us from medical control and prescription to the point where
today, patients increasingly have direct access to our services.”

Dr. Jenny’s Mentor

Dr. Jenny is one of a select few to apprentice annually under Dr. Rocabado, a leading Craniofacial, TMJ, neck and spin rehabilitation expert. He entrusts her to update his course materials and teach his classes to dentists and physical therapists at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences.

About Dr. Paris

Stanley Paris PhD, PT, FAPTA, Hon LLD (Otago)
Dr. Paris has practiced in New Zealand, England, Canada, Bermuda and the United States. He earned a diploma in physiotherapy and another in business – both degree courses today. His first degree is a PhD in neuroanatomy. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association as well as from three other organizations and has an honorary Doctor of Laws from his alma mater the University of Otago in New Zealand.  He received the highest honor in American physical therapy when being awarded the Mary McMillan Founders Lecture and later the Mildred Elson Founders Lecture of the World Confederation of Physical Therapy. Throughout his career he has founded journals, published articles and a book and started more than a dozen private clinics. In 1992 he founded what would become the University of St. Augustine.

Dr. Paris has founded numerous private practices and specialty clinics, two journals, acquired a hotel and turned it into a health resort and founded the University of St. Augustine now with five campuses nationwide. An innovator in practice and education he plans to lay bare his experiences and how he saw and grasped opportunities to build a successful career. While his specialty has been in manual and manipulative therapy, he was the founder and first president of the Orthopaedic Section as well as a founding member of Women’s Health Section now Pelvic Health. His experiences he wishes to share with us in order that we may likewise see and take advantage of opportunities to grow and develop along with the profession.

Gifted Teacher

According to Erland Pettman, PT, MCSP, MCPA, FCAMT, COMT in their published article, A History of Manipulative Therapy, “some (future) prestigious names, e.g., Brian Mulligan, would credit Paris for introducing them to manual therapy. However, from the author’s perspective, Paris’s role in OMT was more significant than that of an accomplished teacher. As a gifted orator, he became the heart and voice of a rapidly emerging physical therapy specialization. His achievements in athletics, education, and political organization will be an inspiration to all manual therapists and a reminder that if you put enough energy into a project, it will succeed.”

Questions From the Live Interview – Answers From Dr. Jenny

Question: Can you please explain the distinction between osteokinematics and arthrokinematics?

Answer: ‘Arthrokinematics’ refers to the intimate mechanics and movement of joint surfaces. Arthrokinematics differs from Osteokinematics – in general Osteokinematics means bone movement and Arthrokinematics joint movement. The angular movement of bones in the human body occurs as a result of a combination of rolls, spins, and slides.

Question: With the emphasis on “Evidence Based Practice” in the physical therapy profession, how do you see this impacting innovation in our profession?

Answer:

Innovation is where we grow as a profession.  As long as we can continue to do research on near learnings or patterns that we see in our practice, we can justify the innovation.  What is important is to continue to connect with those that are interested in research so that we can keep it evidence based.

Question: Hi, I am a student from the University of St. Augustine. Thank you for the inspirational interview with all you the professors! I felt TMJ was overlooked in many books and workshops. Do you recommend any foundational books about Craniofacial Therapy for students or new grads to read in order to learn more?

Answer: Bill Esser, PT is writing a very well written book on physical therapy evaluation and treatment.  You should contact him directly as he may be able to direct you on where to purchase the book.  He has the most recent book out there and it is very thorough and well organized.

Question: Do either of you feel that it is time for a specialized APTA section dedicated to airway and craniofacial/craniomandibular specialization?  If so, do you have any recommendations to fast forward this process?

Answer: Dr. Paris believes that it would be easier to be a subspecialty under the Orthopedic section.  He recommends a SIG (special interest group) of the Orthopaedic Academy.

Question: Thank you so much for organizing this. Just an amazing experience to listen to these living legends! So inspiring!!

Answer:  Yes, It has been too long that these important figures in the PT profession have been together.  They have changed the field of craniofacial treatment and we need the world to know how important their relationship.  Both Dr. Rocabado and Dr. Paris have raised the bar of professionalism and autonomy in our practice.  We need to learn from these mentors and keep contributing to the profession so that it grows and evolves with the research and innovation of the field.
